I've struggled to be open about this.

It’s time to get real…
Also, I need you to know that when I sit down every week to write this, it’s like I am sitting down with a best friend whom I’m about to tell a secret.
These words come straight from the heart. Often I cry while I write.
It’s so damn cathartic. Words are my love language.
Words - as long as I can put them on a screen and not speak them out loud - are therapy to me.
I’ve been asked before how I write and the most immediate answer always is:
I don’t know, I just do.
I sit down and let flow through my fingertips what comes through. Often I have no idea what exactly it will be, but I always know that there is a message.
And if this just sounded a bit too woo woo for you, then welcome to my brain…
I’ll agree with you, it is weird.
Which is why I can’t really answer the question,
how do you write?
Where did you learn it?
Because once I had the alphabet down, it didn’t really feel like it was in my hands anymore, it just became my way of expressing.
Healing, really.
Every breakup, every loss, every fight… it led me to write.
That’s how I found poetry.
Or it found me, ya know, just to keep up with the woo woo…
I’ll be honest, I’ve been very hesitant to talk about this because, for a person who prides herself on pretty much always finding the words,
I didn’t quite…for this.
But I'm going to try and tell you...
Here’s really what happens when I write.
It’s like an inner surge, an unavoidable need, a sensation you can’t help but give in to that arises within.
It’s that feeling that lets me know there’s something I need to bring to paper (or well, an iPhone screen, let’s be honest).
And like I said, it’s so healing that I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that.
One day it dawned on me though…
Not everyone knows this form of expression.
In fact, very few people know this form of expression.
Heck despite it being one of the most profound, intimate ways of sharing what is happening within me
(I may have overwhelmed an ex-boyfriend or two by sending them what I’ve written about them and then publishing it, whoopsie),
I still didn’t feel comfortable in the full expression of myself.
I kept it hidden.
Secret.
Buried my emotions behind faceless words and the story of “this is too much, I am too much.”
Until…
I didn’t.
Until my story spilled over into real life and I removed myself from places that I knew would keep my expression small and put myself into spaces where I could practice the truth of it.
Can you stop being so cryptic, Melanie?
Yes.
A real example is (it’s obv more nuanced, as life always is, God I wish it were this easy but this is actually a really decent example):
I removed myself from an office that felt like suffocation and put myself into a yoga studio where I was expected to show up authentically.
A physical shift that forced me into an emotional one.
Was it comfortable?
F*CK NO!
But it forced me to express myself in a way that felt like truth.
And it made me realize… that I am so far from the only one that struggles with self-expression.
Especially women.
Which is why I brought to life this workshop called
FEMININE EXPRESSION
…because I know what it means to be kept (or keep yourself) small and quiet,
say yes, when everything inside you screams no,
or simply not know what true expression really looks and feels like.
This next Wednesday, April 22, at 19:00 you can start exploring what that expression truly means for you at an in-person workshop in Zurich!
FEMININE EXPRESSION is a women’s sharing circle, movement, and writing workshop where you get to say out loud and explore what’s been kept buried deep down for too long.
Find more details HERE and sign up through this same website.
And if you can’t make it (there will be more) or would like to start in a more intimate 1:1 setting, my door (email inbox) is always open…
Love,
Mel
